How to Study for ABFM Board Certification (2026): Family Medicine Board Review Resources

ABFM (American Board of Family Medicine) certification confirms competence across the full breadth of family medicine: adult medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, psychiatry, geriatrics, sports medicine, and preventive care. The exam is a one-day, computer-based assessment taken during or after residency.

Family medicine is the broadest specialty. The challenge is not the depth of any single topic — it is the width. You need to know something about everything, and the exam tests your ability to manage common conditions at the primary care level.

The Resources

AAFP Board Review

The AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) Board Review is the specialty-specific review course offered by the professional society. It provides structured content aligned to the ABFM exam blueprint, video lectures, and practice questions. Many residency programmes provide institutional access or include it in the training budget.

UWorld — Family Medicine Module

UWorld offers a Family Medicine board review Q-bank with the same high-quality explanations that make it the standard for USMLE preparation. For residents who used UWorld for Step exams, the familiar interface and explanation style make the transition seamless.

BoardVitals — Affordable FM Board Review

BoardVitals offers a Family Medicine board review Q-bank at a competitive price point. Questions are written by board-certified family physicians. It is a credible option for residents on a tighter budget.

iatroX (US) — Free Adaptive Family Medicine

iatroX offers a free AI-adaptive Family Medicine Q-bank. The adaptive algorithm targets your weak clinical areas automatically. For family medicine — where the topic breadth makes it easy to neglect certain areas — the adaptive approach is particularly valuable. The algorithm ensures you do not inadvertently skip paediatrics because you are spending all your time on adult medicine.

KSA Requirements

The ABFM requires Knowledge Self-Assessment (KSA) activities as part of its Continuous Certification programme. These are periodic assessments that must be completed on specific clinical topics. AAFP and other providers offer KSA-eligible activities. iatroX's adaptive FM bank can supplement KSA preparation by maintaining broad clinical knowledge between formal assessment periods.

Study Plan

Most FM residents prepare over 3–6 months. Use the AAFP Board Review or UWorld as your primary resource (structured content + questions). Supplement with iatroX for free adaptive weak-area drilling. Take an ABFM practice exam 4–6 weeks before the real exam to calibrate your readiness.
